Practical Prayer Practices – Tip 4

by Rev. Gwen Dreger

Matthew 18:19 (KJV)

19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

Agreement.

When considering the power of agreement in prayer, most recall the scripture that says.

Matthew 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

Agreement is powerful, it is a principal or fruit of unity. Psalm 133 says that where there is unity there is God’s blessing. So, unity is good and a great goal to aim for! But, unity will not come through folks gathering and making decisions about what truths they agree with. Unity comes by the work of the Holy Spirit deep with the heart.

The Holy Spirit longs to have believers come to a place where they truly dwell together. He works towards that and exhorts us to love and forgive to help us walk in that way. When we humbly allow Him to work out the things that divide us, we automatically step on a path leading to a unified spirit.

People are crying out for peace on earth. But, when there is no peace manifest in the heart, there is no way peace is obtained. Peace on earth comes from unity. Unity is sometimes recognized through a cause. When people are seeing or desiring the same goal, they will ‘unite’ to achieve it. People have rallied around the goal of obtaining peace, and yet it remains out of reach.

Peace is out of reach due to lack of group agreement. Understanding that, makes it easier to see why it is challenging to unite a world because specific goals are so diverse. They are diverse because of opinion of what, where, when, and how peace should be obtained. This makes it ever so clear that this kind of unity is founded on decisions to agree or to disagree about a topic or goal.

Let’s reference that now to prayer. In group prayer meetings there is sometimes a ‘goal’ or ‘topic’ that a leader will choose to pray for or about. A decision is made to agree with the leader and agree with the prayers being made. People leave content believing that their prayers were heard by God and that agreement was obtained and therefore, we have what we have asked for.

I believe that there is a deeper agreement that the Lord is calling us to. This agreement births from a work that happened in the heart. The Lord has provided gift to the earth according to Ephesians 4:11, that are equipped to bring a unity of the Word of God to people. When they operate and are led by the Holy Spirit they can bring into manifestation the things that God has prepared for them.

It is no wonder that these gifts to the church are constantly experiencing attacks from the devil! If these leaders operate in the callings and giftings bringing the church into unity can you imagine the power and blessing that would be loosed in the earth?

I believe, people are beginning to gather and be strengthened to walk in love as they have never done before. Forgiving and trusting God in new ways. Loving His Word and allowing the Holy Spirit to truly lead them daily. This kind of change brings agreement in the depths of our heart as God is able to bring personal revelation of His ways and His Word into living truth.

When God reveals Himself to individuals, agreement is born, and unity rises up from within. The struggles of life dim and our prayers move into the supernatural in what seems to be the most natural way.

This is the power of agreement and this is the way to exciting times of praying together!
